What is left to say about Greek food? Traditional Greek food is by far more simple than French cuisine but it is still very tasteful and it has nourished for years Greeks and often in very difficult times. Since the big crisis in 2009, Greeks started to be interested again in food and cuisine, many new chefs appeared in the “food” scene, and we only talked about “food” on TV when people did not have enough to eat. It’s a paradox, I know, but it worked, because finally, when you have nothing else to lose and you are left with nothing, then food brings comfort, especially when you innovate.
My Greek cuisine is light but still very tasteful and good because it’s healthy! It’s your turn to try it :)
Artichokes "à la Polita" (like in Constantinople)
These artichokes are cooked along with potatoes, carrots, onions, and peas, and they are perfumed with dill and have the taste of lemon! It’s a Greek traditional dish and it’s very special and unusual but so tasty!
Beef with lemon juice, peppers, mustard and oregano (lemonato)
This is a fine beef stew that is seasoned with lemon and mustard and has some bitterness thanks to green peppers but also some sweetness and delicacy thanks to oregano!
Baby cuttlefish with onions and red wine (soupies krassates)
These baby cuttlefish are cooked into red wine and have a tomato sauce as well as candied onions! It’s really good and the secret is the use of peppercorns which brings sweetness to the dish and the use of allspice which brings its special character! It’s really good and you should not miss the opportunity to make it!
Beetroot Salad with Greek Yogurt
A beetroot salad with Greek yogurt that is also tasteful thanks to garlic and some Xérès vinegar (or any other red wine vinegar) which brings its special character!
Meatballs in the oven (Mpiftekia)
These meatballs in the oven are a traditional Greek dish! They are simply made with ground beef, onion, garlic, egg, breadcrumbs, olive oil, red wine vinegar (or Xérès vinegar if you have some) and oregano! They are cooked in the oven and even if they are a little bit compact (because they don’t use much oil) they are delicious :-) If you want to taste the meat more omit the oregano ;-)
Peas in tomato sauce with dill (arakas)
These peas in tomato sauce with dill are so delicious and light that you will eat them as a standalone meal with no problem at all! They are different from the standard peas we eat in France because they are by far more flavorful! Give them a try and you will not made peas in another manner ;-) And of course it’s vegan!
